Raitaa ja pilkkuu - Stripey and Spottee

Olen tainnut jäädä jumiin raitoihin :) . Virkattujen lapasten ohje alempana.
Wonder if I am stuck with stripes :) . Instructions for crocheted mittens in English at the bottom of the page.

Piilosilmukoilla virkatut lapaset.
Slip Stitch Crocheted mittens.

Jälleen yksi pari raidallisia lapasia! Lankana Villa Laurilan suomenlammashahtuva 285 tex x 4 luonnonvalkoisena ja -ruskeana eli nämä kaksiväriset lapaset ovat todella paksut. Lankaa kului kaikkiaan 160 g.

Hyvin yksinkertainen lapasen perusmalli, ei peukalokiilaa. Kuvan lapanen mahtuu naiselle.

Virkkaa lapasensuuhun piilosilmukoilla (eli kiinteillä ketjusilmukoilla) 5 kerrosta edellisen kerroksen silmukan takareunasta poimittuna.

Peukaloissa kerroksen vaihtumiskohta on peukalonhangan puolella piilossa.

Näissä lapasissa on reunuksen (5 krs) jälkeen virkattu kuviota 13 krs, jonka jälkeen on jätetty peukaloaukko (8 s leveä), ja jatkettu kuviota, kunnes pikkusormi on piilossa (yht. 28 krs).

Jatka kuvion virkkaamista, kunnes pikkusormi on piilossa (yht. 28 krs).

Peukaloaukon leveys on 8 silmukkaa (yht. 16), ja molemmista kulmista poimitaan lisäksi 2 s (yht. 20 s.), jotta saadaan kuvion vaatima neljällä jaollinen luku.

Lisäksi lapaset on kuivuttuaan harjattu nurjalta pehmeiksi.

In English

Yet another pair of striped mittens! Yarn is Villa Laurila's Finnish Sheep thick unplied 285 tex x 4, in natural white and natural brown, and yes, these two-coloured mittens are extra thick due to the loose strands on the reverse. I used total 160 g yarn.

This is a very simple basic mitten pattern with no thumb wedge. These mittens fit for women. I used 4.0 mm hook, and pulled the stitches rather loose.

The pattern is divisible by four (2 s white, 2 s brown). In the mittens on the photo there are 40 s, and using the same yarn, you will need 36 s for children's mittens (size 10 to 11 years old). If you use thinner yarn, you may need to crochet for example 44, 48, 52 or 56 stitches.

Crochet 36 chain stitches, and join them with a slip stitch. Crochet 5 rows of slip stitches into the back loop of the stitch. It's worth making a short 'cuff' by crocheting into the back loop, because that keeps the cuff straight and it won't curl up. When crocheting the first row, an alternative is to crochet into the small bumb behind the chain (camel hump). That will make the edge look a bit different (plaited).

After the narrow 'cuff', continue crocheting slip stitches, but now into the front loop. Try to keep your stitches loose. Crocheting into the front loop namely easily pulls the stitches tighter than intended, and your mitten may become way too narrow. Start crocheting the pattern, and crochet 13 rows (or desired lenght).

The pattern is simple 2x2, meaning there are 2 s white, 2 s brown alternating, and there are two similar rows on the top of each other. Every second row you'll need to crochet 4 s in same colour at the 'seam', in order to change the 2x2 colour blocks.

The slanting comes by itself due to the nature of the slip stitch crochet, and the 'seam' slides diagonally a bit row by row. I placed the 'seam' on the palm side (and the inner side of thumb) so the jogging isn't that visible.

Piilosilmukoilla virkatut lapaset.
Slip Stitch Crocheted mittens.

After having crocheted the short edging (5 rows), and the pattern for 13 rows (or the desired lenght), leave an opening (8 s) for the thumb, and continue the pattern until the little finger is covered.

Because at the 'seam' the pattern is not intact, and the 'seam' slides towards upper left row by row, it is better to leave the 'seam' on the palm side. In the right hand mitten leave the tail (spot where you first started) on the thumb side, and in the left hand mitten leave the tail on the little finger side.

For thumb opening, crochet 8 chain stitches (Note: change colours respectively to pattern), jump over 8 stitches in the mitten, and then connect the chain of stitches onto the edge of the mitten again.

Continue crocheting the pattern until the little finger is covered (28 rows). Start then decreasing.

Decrease on the 1st row one stitch in every second white stripe. Decrease on the 2nd row again one stitch in every second white stripe. Decrease on the 3rd row one stitch in every second brown stripe. Decrease on the 4th row again one stitch in every second brown stripe. For the rest of the stitches, decrease one, crochet one (no decreasing), decrease one, crochet one, etc. At the very end you may want to decrease in every stitch (that will make the top a bit rounder).

Start crocheting the thumb on the thumb web side so that the 'seam' will be invisible on the inner side of the thumb. Match the pattern colours on the thumb, too, and change patterns every 2 rows. Because the width of the thumb opening is 8 stitches (total 16 s), you will need to pick up 2 additional stitches at both corners. The total stitch count needs to be 20 s. Pay attention on the gauge especially on the first row, in order to avoid a tight ring at the base of the thumb.

Crochet the pattern until the tip of the thumb is covered, in the mittens on the photo that was 8 rows (or the desired lenght), and start decreasing.

Weave in the threads.

Finished mittens I washed and felted slightly. After drying I brushed the inside fluffy, for warmth.

Happy crocheting :) !
